NEWTOWN, Conn. - Fighting on Ukraine's eastern border is impeding the investigation into the crash of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.
The passenger jet crashed over Ukraine's Donetsk region, just 50 kilometers (20 miles) from the Russian border on July 17. Officials believe the aircraft was shot down.
According to officials, a Russian-made SA-11 air defense missile was shot by Pro-Russian separatists who mistook the aircraft for a military plane. However, fighting has intensified in the region, forcing investigators to retreat from the area.
The Ukrainian military has been instrumental in securing the area around the crash site. On July 27, a caravan of Ukrainian armored vehicles (including armored personnel carriers, tanks, and trucks) entered the town of Shakhtarsk, 15 km (9.3 mi) west of the MH17 crash site. Troops are now advancing on separatist positions closer to the site.
