WASHINGTON - The Philippines is looking to procure two C-130T transport aircraft from surplus U.S. stocks. A notification was given to Congress of the possible government-to-government foreign military sale (FMS) on July 23 by the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency. If approved as expected, the potential sale will involve two C-130Ts, plus 10 T56-16 engines (8 installed and two spares) as well as logistical support. The estimated cost is $61 million.
Three C-130 Hercules form the core of the Philippines Air Force (PAF) operational transport fleet, with two 'H' variants and one in 'B' configuration currently in service. These all underwent a refurbishment program completed in 2013. Other Hercules aircraft are in storage and also in need of repair and refurbishment, with two units currently being evaluated for possible overhaul and return to service. All PAF C-130s were donated by the U.S.
The pressing need to bolster the PAF C-130 fleet was brought home to the government during the relief efforts following a devastating typhoon that struck the Philippines' central islands in November 2013.
