NEWTOWN, Conn. - India has conducted a successful launch of the BrahMos supersonic missile from one of three advanced Talwar class guided missile frigates it is procuring. The missile was fired on May 22 by the INS Tarkash, which was commissioned on November 9, 2012. The frigate was off the coast of Goa when the missile was fired as part of ship acceptance tests.
Russia is building three advanced Talwar class frigates for the Indian Navy. The other two are the INS Teg and INS Trikand. Each warship will carry eight BrahMos missiles in a vertical launch system. The BrahMos has a range of 290 kilometers and carries a 300-kilogram warhead.
India plans to deploy the BrahMos missile on warships, submarines and combat aircraft. A land-based version is being provided to the Indian Army.
