COPENHAGEN - Denmark has opted for the Piranha V from Switzerland's Mowag GmbH, part of General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), as its preferred armored personnel carrier (APC) replacement for the Danish Army's fleet of aging M113-G3-DKs. The country's defense minister, Nicolai Wammen, announced the selection following the defense conciliation meeting of April 30 involving representatives from Danish political parties.
The decision to move forward with the wheeled 8x8 Piranha brings to an end the selection process begun in May 2011 when the Danish Ministry of Defense issued Requests for Proposals to eight bidders, all European armored vehicle producers. In early 2013, the Danish MoD down-selected three tracked and two wheeled vehicle types.
Of the tracked APCs, the three types short-listed by the Danish MoD were BAE Systems' CV90 Armadillo, the ASCOD 2 from GDELS, and the G5 from FFG Flensburger. The wheeled APC survivors were the Piranha V and the VBCI from France's Nexter.
Denmark requirement calls for a procurement of between 206 and 450 vehicles in six configurations: infantry, command and control, ambulance, mortar, engineering, and mechanical. The new vehicles are required to have improved armored protection against mines and IEDs, an ability to operate in both hot and cold climes and all terrain types, plus transportability within a C-130J-30 Super Hercules.
