MOSCOW - According to the head of the Russian Navy, Adm. Viktor Chirkov, the construction of two more submarines for the Navy will get underway soon.

The keel for the next Yasen-class (Project 885) nuclear submarine will be laid down on March 19 at the Sevmash Shipyard, the admiral said.

The first vessel in the class, the Severodvinsk, was commissioned in June 2014. The newest vessel in the class will be the fifth and will be named the Arkhangelsk. A total of eight are to be built by 2020, seven of which will be the modernized and improved Project 885M version.

Also on March 19, the keel for the third Lada-class (Project 667) diesel-powered submarine will be laid at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg.

The first vessel in the class, the St. Petersburg was launched in April 2004 and commissioned in 2005, although it did not enter service until 2010. The second in the class, the Kronshtadt, was launched in late March 2009. The third vessel was originally going to be named the Sevastopol, but the name has been changed to the Velikiye Luki, Chirkov said.

The second and third vessels in the class are slated for delivery to the Russian Navy in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
