PARIS - France sealed arms export contracts worth EUR6.87 billion ($8.8 billion) in 2013, according to a parliamentary report unveiled on September 9. This marks a 42 percent leap from the 2012 total of EUR4.8 billion, largely due to a rise in select orders totaling over EUR200 million apiece. France was able to clinch eight such contracts in 2013, whereas in 2012 it concluded just three.
France' arms export totals for 2012 marked a 26 percent decrease from the previous year when they totaled EUR6.5 billion. With the boost in 2013, France currently ranks fourth amongst global arms suppliers according to the parliamentary report, behind only the U.S., Russia and Britain. Aiding the year-on-year rise in French arms exports for 2013 was an increased presence in the Middle East market, particularly Saudi Arabia where deals worth EUR1.9 billion went into effect.
