NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) has retired its last four operational SEPECAT Jaguars.
Twenty-four strike versions and 14 trainer versions of the Jaguar were delivered through 1980 at cost of $83 million. Additional aircraft were ordered in July 1980 and a two-seat Jaguar from India were also delivered as an attrition replacement. In September 1997, the United Kingdom signed a $64.4 million contract to upgrade remaining Jaguars to Jag 97/Gr.3 standard with new navigation systems, electronic devices, and infrared photography systems. Work was with completed in 2001.
A program was launched in 2008 to replace the badly aging Jaguars. The goal at the time was to remove the aircraft from service around 2012 and bring in a superior alternative to fulfill its strike mission. In December 2012, a GBP2.5 billion ($3.8 billion) contract was signed for 12 Typhoon fighter jets as well as eight Hawk 128 advanced jet trainers.
