NEWTOWN, Conn. - The first of 12 Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft for the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) departed the company's production facility in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 22.
In December 2011, Oman placed a follow-up order for 12 new F-16C/D Block 50 fighters (ten F-16Cs and two F-16Ds) to supplement the air force's existing F-16 fleet. The contract is valued at $600 million. Deliveries of the aircraft began in April 2014 and are expected to be completed by November 2016.
Meanwhile, a $94.7 million firm-fixed-price upgrade contract was awarded on October 12, 2012, to Lockheed Martin to upgrade the existing F-16s (delivered between 2005 and 2008) to the same configurations as the new aircraft. Work will take place at the company's facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and is expected to be completed by May 2016. No further details have been revealed.
