SANTIAGO, Chile - The Chilean Directorate General of Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (DIRECTEMAR) of the Chilean Navy has opened a tender for the acquisition of seven aircraft for coastal surveillance. The tender is valued at $4.4 million.
The new aircraft are intended to replace the Navy's current fleet of Cessna O-2A Skymasters which have been in service since 1997 and are nearing the end of their useful lives.
The acquisition has been named Project Piquero and envisions the first two units to be in service by 2016 followed by the remaining five units in 2017.
All interested parties must submit bids by March 27. An award will be published on May 4.
