EL SALVADOR LOOKS TO THE U.S. TO STRENGTHEN AIR ASSETS
SAN SALVADOR - According to El Salvadorian President Salvador Sanchez Ceren, the Air Force will be strengthened with assistance from the United States.
The president did not specify the type of aircraft the nation would acquire, but the Air Force has several requirements to fill. The Air Force is in urgent need of reinforcements for its attack wing. El Salvador attempted to procure a small batch of EMB314/A-29 Super Tucanos from Brazilian manufacturer, Embraer, but after a lengthy process, the Legislative Assembly canceled the deal due to funding concerns. El Salvador acquired ten A-37B Dragonfly fighters from Chile last April instead; the purchase was financed by the United States via FMS channels.
In general, El Salvador continues to rely on the United States for equipment donations. During 2012 alone, the U.S. donated MD 500E helicopters, patrol boats, and various electronics to the Salvadorian forces.
