U.S. AIR FORCE SUPPORTS RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR IMPROVING AIRBORNE SELF-DEFENSE

Source: Forecast International

NEWTOWN, Conn. - The U.S. Air Force's IR/EO Warning and Countermeasures effort is part of the service's larger Electronic Combat Technology program. The program develops technologies and techniques to counter threats from new missiles and their increasingly sophisticated sensors. The next several years should see annual funding rates of up to $11 million to help support the program.

In coming years, the program will continue to develop, test, and refine IR countermeasures concepts and techniques for use against current infrared missile systems. Surrogate imaging sensors, processors, and track algorithms will be developed for use in testing and evaluating concepts for countermeasures against advanced threat systems.

Based on a projection of the FY15 defense budget's IR/EO CM Technology program outlay, an estimated $87 million is likely to be spent on the effort over the next ten years.

A report on the IR/EO Warning and Countermeasures is available from Forecast International.
