TEL AVIV - Germany has reluctantly agreed to provide Israel with a significant discount in a missile craft deal.
For months, Berlin said it would not grant a discount of about 30 percent, with German officials objecting to the construction of Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories. However, it was announced early this week that Germany would now cut EUR300 million ($382 million) from the estimated EUR900 million ($1.2 billion) cost for three fast missile craft, said officials from both nations.
Israel has been asking for a 30 percent discount similar to that received on earlier German contracts for its Dolphin-class submarines.
The missile boats are intended to help protect Israel's offshore gas fields. An initial agreement is expected to be inked within weeks, said officials from both countries.
