MOSCOW - Russia's Caspian Flotilla has begun tactical naval drills in the Caspian Sea. The impromptu exercise will last seven days and will test the fleet's combat-readiness.
The drills will involve 10 minesweepers, motor boats and support vessels as well as about 400 sailors, according to a statement from Russia's Southern Military District on April 23. During the exercise, the group will sail approximately 350 miles down the Volga-Caspian canal canal and conduct the training on the Caspian Sea ranges, the statement said.
Hydrographic ships are also expected to perform navigation operations in the Caspian Sea.
The statement also explained that the first phase will focus on the destruction of naval mines with contact and non-contact sweeps. The minesweepers will then escort the support vessels, eliminating additional mine threats.
The Caspian Sea is bordered by Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
