MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay - Argentina's General Directorate of Military Fabrications (DGFM) has initiated a modernization program for the Army's 155mm towed artillery guns.

The Army decided to upgrade 108 pieces last November under project CITER II. The deal is worth at least $170,000 (ARS1.44 million) but the final figure it expected to be considerable higher.

CITER II will include the replacement of various parts and the modernization of the cradle and barrel recoil system to an automatic one in order to increase the rate of fire. A new motor will also be installed in order to automate distinct movements.

Work will be performed at DGFM's plant in Rio Tercero.
