MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay - The Uruguayan Army has returned the Gaucho 4x4 vehicle (VLEGA) that the Argentinean Army loaned to them in April 2014.
Argentina loaned a prototype of the light-weight, aero-transportable vehicle to Uruguay for testing. The vehicle was to be tested over the course of one year to evaluate its capabilities. However, on February 23, Uruguay ruled out the procurement. A reason for the decision has not been provided.
The Gaucho is capable of transporting four people and cargo of up to 800 kilograms (1,760 lb). The general-purpose vehicle is said to be similar to the U.S. military's HMMWV, of which a number are in service with the Argentinean Army in several variants. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 120 mph and has a range of about 500 kilometers.
