AUSTRALIA SEEKING M88A2 HERCULES HEAVY RECOVERY VEHICLES VIA U.S. FMS
WASHINGTON - Australia has requested a foreign military sale (FMS) of M88A2 Hercules Heavy Recovery Vehicles via the U.S. government-to-government channel. The U.S. State Department notified Congress of its approval of a potential $47 million FMS agreement with Australia on January 26. The Australian request calls for the acquisition of six M88A2 Hercules vehicles, plus associated equipment, parts and logistical support.
The Australian Army currently operates a variety of armored recovery vehicles, including the ASLAV 'F' and 'R' variants, as well as M806A1. It already has seven such M88A2 Hercules' in its inventory, with the latest order request providing an opportunity to supplement this existing fleet. The tracked armored vehicle is used to support battlefield rescue and recovery missions. It was designed to tow the U.S. Army's heavy M1A1 tanks, which Australia's Army acquired as a replacement for its Leopards.
