UKRAINE'S BORDER GUARD SERVICE RECEIVES NEW AMAROK, LAND CRUISER SUVS WITH U.S AID
KYIV, Ukraine - In a ceremony on December 22, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (DPSU) received 35 Volkswagen Amarok and Toyota Land Cruiser 200 SUVs that were attained with the financial assistance of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.
In addition to the new vehicles, U.S officials transferred 2,300 units of protective clothing and an array of automotive repair and maintenance equipment, thermal imaging devices, body armor and radios into the hands of the DPSU. The total worth of the non-vehicle support package is estimated at around USD 10 million.
Although the United States has not initiated or authorized the transfer of lethal support to Ukrainian Military or Security organizations, a variety of non-lethal aid has been delivered to the Ukrainian Army and Border Service over the past several months. The first delivery of non-lethal aid by the U.S to the Ukrainian Border Guard Service took place in early October 2014.
These donations are intended to bolster the operational capabilities and readiness of Ukraine's security institutions as the country contends with the dual challenges of navigating through the political and institutional uncertainties of establishing post-Yanukovych governance and the ongoing military struggle in the country's Eastern provinces against Russian-supported separatists.
