NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Nigerian Defense Ministry has ordered 1,000 assault rifles from Polish firearms maker Fabryka Broni Lucznik.
The 5.56mm Beryl rifles will be supplied to Nigeria's Army in January, and senior company representatives say they expect the country's Defense Ministry to order a further 5,000 weapons next year.
According to the manufacture, the 5.56mm Beryl rifles boast a high degree of reliability, accuracy, durability in harsh conditions.
The Army commenced rebuilding its ordnance assets in 1999.
Earlier in the decade, it purchased 24 Palmaria 155mm self-propelled guns. Their delivery was held up by European Union sanctions imposed during the years of military dictatorship, but deliveries resumed after the civilian government was restored in 1999. By May 2002, 15 of the 24 guns had been delivered (one source reports that 27 were delivered).
