MOSCOW - Russia will use a new mobile security robot to protect selected strategic missile bases. The Taifun-M unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) was shown on the Russian Vesti news program.
These UGVs will patrol bases housing Yars and Topol-M land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Operators will remotely control these unmanned security vehicles using a secure wireless connection. In the future, these UGVs will use an autonomous artificial intelligence system.
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) said in March that several of UGVs equipped with laser-targeting systems and cannons will be deployed at five sites by the end of 2014. These UGVs are part of a plan to upgrade of existing automated security systems around Russian strategic missile facilities.
The UGV will perform reconnaissance and patrol missions, and provide fire support for security personnel at facilities.
