STEADY FUNDING SEEN FOR U.S. NAVY IR COUNTERMEASURES R&D PROGRAM
NEWTOWN, Conn. - The next several years will see steady funding for the U.S. Navy's Tactical Aircraft Directed Infrared Countermeasures (TADIRCM) RDT&E program. The effort seeks to provide front-line jet fighters with protection from IR-controlled air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles by detecting the launch of a threatening missile and then putting laser-produced energy on the missile's seeker head with enough power to disrupt tracking. The U.S. Navy Defense Budget for FY15 includes $202.9 million for the TADIRCM effort through FY19. Development of TADIRCM has been divided into Assault and Strike versions for different applications - the former for rotary aircraft and the latter for fixed-wing aircraft.
A report on the TADIRCM program is available from Forecast International.
