NEWTOWN, Conn. - The PRQ-7 is a handheld military radio that provides the soldier the ability to securely communicate position and text messages through the Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) UHF satellite communications (satcom) network. The PRQ-7 is manufactured by Boeing. Forecast International projects that Boeing will sell almost 3,900 Combat Survivor Evader Locator radios in the coming years. According to U.S. DoD budget documents, PRQ-7 radio provides downed aircrew members and Special Operations Forces personnel with multiple communications capabilities and precision location. The radio determines the survivor's location through an embedded Global Positioning System capability. The survivor transmits position/location and situational information via two-way voice line-of-sight, beacon, or over-the-horizon communication paths.
