NEWTOWN, Conn. - Optus is the main provider of satellite capacity to markets in Australia and New Zealand. With the launch of Optus 10, Optus now operates six spacecraft in orbit. Optus does not have any public plans to expand capacity in the near future. However, the company will need to replace aging satellites, driving deliveries during the forecast period.

Optus' satellite capacity will play an important role in meeting Australia's growing demand for bandwidth. Optus has contracts with major Australian television broadcasters to provide digital free-to-air television service to households. This service will further Australia's goal of switching from analog to digital TV broadcasting.

Optus will also provide interim broadband services while Australia builds two high -throughput satellites to provide broadband coverage to the entire country. Once the two satellites - purchased by NBN Co. - are operational, Optus will operate them under contract.

Optus' parent company, SingTel, considered selling the unit. However, SingTel could not get the price it was looking for and decided to keep the satellite division. SingTel says Optus remains profitable, and the company will continue to invest in its satellite division, meaning satellite deliveries will continue throughout the forecast period.

Satellite deliveries to Optus will primarily serve to replace aging satellites already in orbit. These new satellites will likely feature increased capacity compared to the birds they are replacing, allowing Optus to meet growing demand for bandwidth in Australia and New Zealand without operating additional satellites.
