BEIJING - China is upgrading its Type 094 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. Beijing had planned to build five or six of these submarines, but this number may have shrunk to only five boats.

Originally, China armed this submarine with 12 JL-2 missiles. Later, this figure grew to 16 missiles. The JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) is reportedly based on the DF-31 land-based ICBM. The JL-2 weighs 42 tonnes and carries a payload of 2-2.5 tonnes. The missile has a range of around 7,500-8,000 kilometers.

China is working on the new Type 096 SSBN. This long-range submarine will be larger than any other currently in service. The Type 096 could carry 24 SLBMs. China is reportedly working on the new JL-3 SLBM with a range of 10-11,000 kilometers.
