MOSCOW - Iran is looking to Russia for help modernizing its fleet of Tor-M1 (SA-15 Gauntlet) mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems. Iran operates a large number of Tor-M1s.
Russia's Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol could perform this work. The company already provides Iran with spare parts and crew training.
The Tor-M1 is designed to detect and engage airborne threats, including cruise missiles and guided bombs. The Iranian Tor-M1s currently protect state and military facilities from air attacks.
Russia delivered 29 Tor-M1s to Iran by January 2007.
