MADRID - Spain plans to purchase two surplus Patriot surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries from Germany as it prepares to deploy some of its own Patriot systems to Turkey as part of its NATO commitment. The two batteries procured each include five launchers in the Patriot Advanced Capability Two Plus (PAC-2+) configuration. Spain's eight existing Patriot batteries are in PAC-2 basic configuration. The procurement is valued at ERU41.16 million ($51 million) and will include a command station, transport vehicles and communications equipment.

Spain's first Patriot procurement occurred in 2004 and was also derived from second-hand German stocks.

The two-year Spanish mission in Turkey involves covering that NATO members' southern borders against potential attacks from Syrian forces or rogue ISIS elements. The Spanish deployment will consist of 150 personnel.
