LONDON - The United States is working on guided rounds for use by snipers. This new round will be capable of changing direction in mid-flight and have a range of more than 1,000 meters.
This technology could revolutionize the way sniping is done, according to Major Chris Hunter, a weapons expert and former British army officer. The United States is leading the Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (Exacto) program.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is working with Teledyne Scientific and Imaging. This program has produced a .50 caliber guided round.
The round may be fitted with a microcomputer, which can be controlled remotely in the same way as a precision-guided missile system. Another option is a laser. This round will be far more expensive than the standard version, but will provide a significant increase in accuracy.
