BEIJING - China's unveiling of the new CX-1 cruise missile sparked a debate over its technological origin. China Aerospace Science Industrial Corporation (CASIC) CX-1 has a maximum speed of Mach 3. This missile is not a major breakthrough in Chinese defense technology.

The CX-1 has a close resemblance to the BrahMos, the joint Indian-Russian design project. Some commentators suggest Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, which builds the Yakhont, sold the necessary technology to China. Mashinostroyeniya is involved in the BrahMos project.

The CX-1 has a range of 280 kilometers. Chinese officials say the CX-1 is only superficially resembles the BrahMos. The CX-1 design may be influenced by Russia's Raduga 3M80 Moskit (SS-N-22 Sunburn) missile.
