TAIPEI - Taiwan is performing additional tests of its Tien Chien II (Sky Sword II) missiles. These missiles are fired from Knox-class destroyers, as well as Lafayette-class frigates.
The Tien Chien II is a radar-guided missile developed by Taiwan's military-run Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) during the 1990s. This system began as an air-to-air missile deployed by the Taiwanese Air Force.
Later, Taiwan developed a shipborne version of the Tien Chien II. This version was designed to replace the Chaparral SAMs and radar systems on Taiwan's Lafayettes.
Testing of the Tien Chien II from the Lafayettes is on schedule. There are no plans on what to do with the Chaparrel missiles removed from these warships. These missiles could be moved to Taiping Island, a Taiwan-controlled island in the disputed South China Sea.
