WASHINGTON - The U.S. Navy's USS Shiloh guided-missile cruiser is participating in Valiant Shield 2014. The cruiser fired a Harpoon anti-ship missile as part of a ship-sinking exercise. The missile hit the ex-USS Fresno, a mothballed tank landing ship being used as a target vessel.

Valiant Shield started on September 15 and continues through September 23. The exercise is taking place on Guam and in waters and airspace around the Marina islands.

Two aircraft carriers, 19 surface ships, more than 200 aircraft and an estimated 18,000 personnel from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps are participating in the exercise. This exercise is held every two years.
