POLAND ACCELERATING PROCUREMENT OF NEW MISSILES

WARSAW - Poland is accelerating to plans to acquire new missile systems. Warsaw plans to acquire 30 new 30 attack helicopters, as well as air defense missile systems. Poland decided to accelerate these purchases due to Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

Poland plans to acquire new surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) in 2015. The contenders for this contract include Raytheon and a team of Thales and MBDA.

Warsaw will move up by two years the purchase of new attack helicopters. Candidates for the attack helicopter contract include Boeing's AH-64 Apache, AgustaWestland's AW-129 Mangusta, and Eurocopter's EC-Tiger. One of these helicopters will replace Poland's worn-out fleet of Mi-24 Hinds.

Poland wants these helicopters ready for service in 2019 or 2020.
