BEIJING - China has performed a successful land-based missile defense test. The Chinese system intercepted a simulated missile threat on July 23. The test was conducted within Chinese territory. Chinese officials said the test met its preset goal. No further details on the test were provided by the Chinese Ministry of Defense (MoD).

China is known to have plans to build its own missile defense shield. When this system could be operational is unknown. Beijing is investing billions of dollars in the modernization of its armed forces, which includes acquiring technology from foreign sources.
