NEWTOWN, Conn. - Iran claims it is producing another new air defense system, according to local news sources. Tehran is providing little specific information. The new mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system is the Herz-9, but another name mentioned is Talisman-9.
The Herz-9 is capable of engaging low-altitude aerial targets. Twin launchers are mounted on wheeled or tracked vehicles. Iran says mass production has begun.
Iran also operates other short-range SAMs, including the Ya Zahra. Iran said mass production of this missile began in January 2013. The Ya Zahra is believed to be an upgraded version of the French-designed Crotale sold to Iran before the 1979 revolution.
The Herz-9 could be an upgraded version of an existing missile system. China and Russia have supplied missile systems and technology to Iran.
