YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan - Japan is planning to purchase three Global Hawk unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), according to media reports. These air vehicles could be stationed at Misawa Air Base in Aomori prefecture. Northrop Grumman builds the Global Hawk UAV, and Rolls-Royce supplies the AE3007 turbofan engine.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) is asking for funds for this purchase in its draft FY2015 budget. The Japanese MoD want to begin operating these UAVs in FY2019.

Japan is looking to enhance its aerial surveillance capabilities in response to Chinese aggression in disputed maritime territories and North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles.
