BOGOTA, Colombia - The first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) built entirely in Colombia with indigenous technology will be exhibited October 29-31 by the Colombian Aviation Industry Corporation (CIAC) at the Expodefensa IV defense and security exhibition in Bogota.
The new UAV, called the Iris, is a large vehicle that can provide high resolution video and real-time data to military forces on the ground. The Iris is intended for use during patrol missions and for observation and surveillance operations. It can also be used for combat.
The Iris can reach a maximum altitude of 8,000 feet and has a flight range of a 100 kilomters. It can carry a high-definition optical sensor such as a FLIR HD imaging system, and can take off and land on short runways.
So far, the vehicle has been tested in vigilance flights for the protection of oil pipelines and other large Colombian infrastructure. The UAV is being adapted to meet military requirements.
