NEW DELHI - The Indian government is telling the state-run Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to get its act together. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the DRDO suffers from a "chalta hai" attitude, which means "brushing off things like rules because people think they don't matter."
Many DRDO programs are years behind schedule. Modi said a project conceived in 1992 should not still be in development in 2014.
DRDO projects include the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Nag anti-armor missile, Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) and the Airborne Early Warning and Control System. These projects are also seeing cost overruns.
