TEL AVIV - Israel is using small robotic vehicles to investigate tunnels built by Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group. The tunnels run under the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel.

The Micro Tactical Ground Robot (MTGR) used by the Israel Defense Force (IDF) is built by Roboteam, a Tel Aviv-based firm. The Micro Tactical Ground Robot is designed to clear obstacles, climb 8-inch stairs and maneuver in tight areas.

The IDF told Roboteam it had won the tender for 110 man-portable robots during the second week of Operation Protective Edge. This operation began on July 8.

The MTGR weighs 20 pound and is equipped with five onboard cameras. In addition, the robot is outfitted with an internal microphone and infrared laser points.

Hamas is believed to have spent an estimated $30 million to build the 36 tunnels from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
