LONDON - The United Kingdom plans to purchase eight MQ-8C Triton unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). This program could cost more than GBP 600 million. These UAVs will patrol the U.K.'s coasts from terrorists, drug smugglers and illegal immigrants.

The United Kingdom decided to move ahead with this project due to recent Russian incursions into British waters.

The investment comes amid severe defense cuts in the United Kingdom. These cuts mean that 30,000 armed forces personnel will be cut by 2020.

Northrop Grumman manufactures the Triton. This UAV is a maritime version of the RQ-4 Global Hawk UAV.
