WASHINGTON - U.S.-operated unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) have performed additional air strikes on militants in Yemen, according to local news reports. The unmanned aircraft performed its first air strike on April 19. The air strike hit targets in Baida, a central Yemeni province.
The second air strike occurred on April 20. An unmanned aircraft fired several missiles into an al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) training camp in the Wadi Ghadina region, which is located in the southern province of Abyan.
The final air strike took place on April 21 in southern Yemen. The UAV fired a missile at an off-road vehicle traveling in Shabwa province, a known stronghold for AQAP. Yemeni commandos were operating in the area and secured the vehicle's wreckage.
Previous air strikes were conducted on: January 8, January 23, March 3, March 5, March 10, March 13, and April 1. The U.S. carried out at least 23 air strikes in Yemen during 2013, 53-54 in Yemen in 2012 and 18 during the course of 2011.
Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi has defended the use of UAVs against local militants.
