MANILA - The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will receive the first of three new Airbus Military C-295 medium airlifters this month, which is five months earlier than original scheduled. The arrival of the first unit will provide a boost to the flagging airlift capabilities of the PAF, which rely on several overhauled Lockheed C-130s donated by the United States.
The C-295s were selected by the Department of National Defense as the preferred platform to meet the PAF medium-lift requirement in January 2014. Airbus Military's offer involved the supply of three C-295 transporters with integrated logistics systems to the Philippines at a cost of PHP5.288 billion ($118 million). These airlifters will complement the PAF's three refurbished C-130 Hercules. The PAF is also slated to two C-130Ts from surplus U.S. stocks in 2016.
