NEWTOWN, Conn. - In its continued International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) shopping spree, the United Arab Emirates has ordered two C-17 Globemaster IIIs.
The deal with Boeing, valued at AED2.3 billion ($630 million), was among the largest announced during the IDEX show that unfolded this week in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE first ordered the C-17 at IDEX 2009. Four of the strategic airlifters were purchased for the price of AED4.3 billion ($1.2 billion). The UAE broadened the C-17 agreement on January 6, 2010, when it signed a $634 million direct commercial contract with Boeing for six, rather than the original four, new C-17s. Together with the logistics contract worth an estimated $501 million, the total purchase ($1.13 billion) came in slightly lower than the IDEX-09 agreement figure of $1.2 billion. Deliveries of the C-17As began in May 2011; the final two were handed over in 2012.
