KIEV, Ukraine - Ukrainian state arms producer Ukroboronprom and France's Sagem are implementing a joint project for the upgrade of Ukraine's Mi-24 Hind helicopters.
According to Roman Romanov, General Director at Ukroboronprom, "these helicopters will fly under any and all conditions - at night, in fog, at any time of the day. There is a movie about the future, where the pilot is wearing a helmet, he has a lens, and in this lens he sees all helicopter's characteristics, all flight data, as well as sighting. An air-cyborg, so to speak. This is the equipment we will have soon."
Ukraine's fleet of Mi-24s were previously upgraded under a joint venture with between Ukroboronprom and Sagem. The agreement, initially signed in 2008, was revived in Paris on December 2, 2011. The contract called for the aircraft to be upgraded to the Mi-24PU standard. Sagem provided multi-function displays, the OLSP-410 multi-payload turret, a mission computer, the VS-1500 recording system, the Sigma 95L navigation system, and the Mercator digital mapping module. The Hinds also received TV3-117VMA SBM1V engines made by Ukraine's Motor Sich joint stock company. They were also equipped to operate Barrier anti-tank guided missiles designed by Ukraine's Luch design bureau. The work was conducted at the Aviakon aircraft repair plant, and the modernized aircraft were returned to service in May 2012.
Romanov also said that the Ukrainian army expects to adopt Ukrainian-made anti-tank missiles in the near future. "We will have the Alt anti-tank missile, its specifications to be revealed later ... It is a very high performance and most importantly, the first fully Ukrainian design rocket, which uses dual-mode guidance method," he said.
