NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Russian Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with MiG for the purchase of 16 MiG-29SMT multi-role fighter jets. The deal is valued at RUB17 billion ($473 million) and includes ground support and test equipment.
Under the terms of the contract, all 16 aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2016. The SMT variant is powered by twin augmented RD-33 series 3 turbofans rated at 18,260lbst.
The Russian Air Force has as many as 465 MiG-29s in inventory; the majority (about 441) are the standard A variant. Plans call for 200-300 to eventually be upgraded to the SMT variant to provide air-to-ground capability. The Air Force will eventually replace the entire MiG-29 squadron with the fifth generation T-50 PAK FA fighter. In the meantime, the MiG-29 remains Russia's primary frontline fighter.
