NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Antonov Company has completed state tests of the An-70 widebody military transport aircraft. The tests were conducted jointly by the company and Ukraine's Ministry of Defense State Scientific and Test Center (SSTC). According to Antonov, the aircraft is now ready for production.

The An-70 is a four-engine, strategic heavy airlift transport aircraft initially developed in 1990 by Antonov for the Soviet Ministry of Defense/Soviet Air Force. The An-70 is now considered a joint project between Russia and Ukraine, although Russia has been threatening to pull out of the project since August 2006. Russian participation in the program remains questionable.

The first serially produced An-70 was completed in December 2012. The Ukrainian MoD plans to acquire 12 of the aircraft with deliveries expected to begin later this year.
