MILLENNIUM SPACE SYSTEMS MARKS SIX MONTHS OF ALTAIR PATHFINDER SPACECRAFT OPERATIONS
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - Millennium Space Systems has successfully completed the first six months of operation of its ALTAIR Pathfinder mission. The spacecraft has been operating for 4,500 hours in low Earth orbit (LEO). With completion of the initial six-month mission, the FCC approved continued operations of the spacecraft for an additional six months, thereby allowing a full year of on-orbit operations and enabling Millennium to monitor performance and continue risk reduction efforts.
The ALTAIR Pathfinder carried to the International Space Station aboard Orbital ATK's Cygnus cargo transfer vehicle in April 2017. It was later deployed into space by Nanoracks.
Millennium is using the satellite to test its satellite platform and subsystems so it can sell them to customers. The company has been focusing on sales to government customers in particular. The platform is a 6-Unit CubeSat with a launch mass of about 4 kilograms.
Millennium is hoping to capitalize on the growing demand for small satellites. Many SmallSat operators, such as Planet of San Francisco, develop and build their own satellites. However, as the market for SmallSats grow, opportunities to build the spacecraft for customers will increase.
