CANBERRA - Nine new surface warships of the Royal Australian Navy will receive the capability to engage ballistic missiles. Australia plans to begin construction of these warships in 2020. These warships will defend Australia from short to intermediate-range ballistic missile attacks by rogue states.

The new frigates will be equipped with the U.S.-made AEGIS combat management systems. Lockheed Martin, the AEGIS prime contractor, will work with Saab Australia.

BAE Systems, Navantia and Fincantieri are competing for the A$35 billion (US$27.39 billion) contract. The winner of the frigate contract will be announced in early 2018.
