TEL AVIV - The Iron Dome defense system has successfully intercepted a missile during a recent test. This is a hit-to-kill system, but it can also engage short-range missiles and rockets using shrapnel. The first live fire test of Iron Dome occurred in mid-2009. Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is the prime contractor for the Iron Dome. This system is to enter service in 2011, but could be rushed into service sooner.
Iron Dome would provide a lowest tier defense capability as part of Israel's multi-layered missile defense umbrella. The system is designed to intercept missiles and rockets with a range of up to 70 kilometers. Rafael will market Iron Dome to foreign countries. Potential customers for the Iron Dome are Brazil and India.
